Dear AFT Utah Unionists,
AFT Utah was heard loud and clear this evening at the State Board of Utah's public hearing for Administrative Rule R277-511 Academic Pathway to Teaching (APT). AFT Utah President, Brad Asay, spoke in opposition to this proposed rule during the public comment portion of the hearing. The points that were presented in his speech included the following:
It's time to Fight Back and Fight Forward! Public Education is a multi-billion dollar industry and several Utah Legislators are profiting from the legislation that they sponsor and pass. This is not unique to Utah. It's taking place across the United States. The promise of America isn’t disappearing by accident. We are being ripped off. Our students are suffering. Our families are being squeezed. Our communities are being starved.
The attacks by those who demand and pursue austerity, polarization, privatization, and deprofessionalization increase at the 2015 Utah Legislative Session.
(This speech was delievered by Brad Asay on Aug. 10, 2013 at the Davis County Democratic Breakfast in Kaysville, Utah. The speech was adapted from a New York Times' column written by Randi Weingarten, AFT National President)
