Nominations For AFT Utah Executive Officer Positions Now Open

Nominations for AFT Utah Executive Officers is now open and will close on April 30, 2020 at 5:00 P.M. All offices are open for nominations and descriptions for each position are posted below. If you wish to nominate yourself or someone, please send the following information to reception@aftutah.org:

May 1, 2020, nominees will be contacted and asked if they accept their nomination. Nominees information will be sent to the Elections Committee Chairperson and elections will be conducted. 

AFT Utah Officer Positions and Description From the AFT Utah Constitution

President

The President shall:

  1. Serve as the chairperson of the Executive Board and preside at all meetings thereof.

  2. Attend and, if appropriate, preside at activities in which representation is needed or sought.

  3. Appoint chairpersons and all members of the committees, with the approval of the Executive Board, as provided for in this constitution, and serve as an ex-officio participant of all appointive committees.

  4. Charge all appointed committees, in consultation with the Executive Board, with their duties and responsibilities.

  5. Prepare, in collaboration with the Secretary/Treasurer, a goal-oriented budget for submission to the Executive Board.

  6. Subject to the approval or direction of the Executive Board, execute all contracts and other instruments dealing with the purchase or sale of property; contracts or leases for the rental of office space, meeting space, storage space, or other space or facilities used for AFT Utah functions or events; and contracts for the purchase of equipment. The Executive Board may, in specific cases, authorize the signature of another officer, if the President and Secretary-Treasurer are unavailable.

  7. Represent AFT Utah as the official spokesperson in all its external relationships with the media, state, counties, school districts, other political subdivisions, and such civic, social, and fraternal organizations, including the serving on appointed boards, committees, councils, and commissions where an official, non-technical representative is sought, unless the Executive Board directs otherwise. When speaking as an individual or a member of the Executive Board the President should clearly identify that limited capacity.

  8. Make reports and perform other duties appropriate to the office or required by the Executive Board.

  9. Assume other duties as assigned.

Secretary/Treasurer

The Secretary/Treasurer shall:

  1. Be an executive officer who, in case of the inability or resignation of the President, performs the duties and responsibilities of the President.

  2. Oversee notices and keep minutes of all meetings.

  3. Be in charge of the seal, bookkeeping, accounting, and proper disbursement of the funds of AFT Utah.

  4. Render to the President and to the Executive Board an account of all fiscal transactions and the financial condition of AFT Utah.

  5. Serve as the chairperson for the Executive Board meetings in the absence of the President.

  6. Act as the parliamentarian at all meetings of AFT Utah.

  7. Assume other duties as assigned.

Vice President for Political Action

The Vice President for Political Action shall:

  1. Serve as the chairperson of the Political Action Committee and provide recommendations for committee membership and a regular meeting schedule.

  2. Prepare and present legislative priorities for approval by the Executive Board. The Executive Board shall approve expenditures from the segregated political funds of AFT Utah.

  3. Report to the Executive Board on political issues and activities and their impact on AFT Utah members and their jobs.

  4. Provide that the resolution statements adopted at the convention are included as priorities in the political activities of AFT Utah.

  5. Recommend and develop position statements on legislative initiatives and proposals.

  6. Act as a liaison between AFT Utah and legislature as required by the Executive Board.

  7. Determine, in consultation with the AFT Utah President, the union lobbyist(s) during the state interim and general legislative sessions.

  1. Provide information and articles to the AFT Utah Communications Specialist to keep the membership and leaders informed of political action issues.

  2. Submit a goal-oriented political action budget proposal to be considered during the annual adoption of the fiscal year budget.

Vice President for Membership Services Advocacy

The Vice President for Membership Advocacy shall:

  1. Serve as the chairperson for the bargaining, arbitration, and grievance committee, which makes recommendations for legal expenditures and use of staff time for grievance related problems.

  2. Oversee grievance-related issues and advise as needed.

  3. Conduct grievance training for locals and their members.

  4. Ensure that membership is well informed of the benefits of AFT.

  5. Submit a goal-oriented membership services budget proposal to be considered during the annual adoption of the fiscal year budget.

Vice President of Organizing for PreK-12 Employees

The Vice President of Organizing for PreK-12 Employees shall:

  1. Serve as the chairperson of the PreK-12 Employee Committee and provide recommendations for committee membership and a regular meeting schedule.

  2. Prepare and present to the Executive Board, the organizing plan of action to expand membership in public schools.

  3. Develop and recommend resolutions for the annual state convention.

  4. Provide information and articles to the AFT Utah Communications Specialist to keep the PreK-12 employees informed of professional issues affecting that constituency.

  5. Work in coordination with the Vice President for Political Action to find political solutions to issues affecting the PreK-12 members.

Vice President for Higher Education

The Vice President for Higher Education shall:

  1. Serve as a member of the Executive Board of the Utah College Council/AFT.

  2. Report all activities of the Utah College Council/AFT to the AFT Utah Executive Board.

  3. Develop and recommend resolutions for the annual state convention.

  4. Provide information and articles to the AFT Utah Communications Specialist to keep higher education members informed of professional issues affecting that constituency.

  5. Work in coordination with the Vice President for Political Action to find political solutions to issues affecting higher education members.

Vice President of Organizing for Classified Employees

The Vice President of Organizing for Classified Employees shall:

  1. Serve as the chairperson of the Classified Employees Committee and provide recommendations for committee membership and a regular meeting schedule.

  2. Prepare and present, to the Executive Board the organizing plan of action to expand membership in the public schools.

  3. Develop and recommend resolutions for the state annual convention.

  4. Provide information and articles to the AFT Utah Communications Specialist to keep classified members informed of professional issues affecting that constituency.

  5. Work in coordination with the Vice President for Political Action to find political solutions to issues affecting the classified members.
